Types of Sea Cadet Units in the Chicagoland Area
There are several different types of units in the Chicagoland area, each with
its own focus and
strengths. The maps below are provided for your convenience in selecting the
unit nearest you, but you are not required to join the nearest unit; all units
have cadets from all around the area. If there is another unit with a focus
closer to your interests, and you can commit to the attendance requirements, you
are free to join any unit. There are links to all these units on our Links page.
Currently the only division in Illinois besides these is the Pimiteoui Division
in Peoria, for which there is also a link on our Links page.
There are four
basic types of sea cadet units:
 |
Divisions,
such as Aurora, Calumet Harbor, John F. Kennedy (Forest Park),
Major General John L Borling (Rockford), and 9-1-1
(Great Lakes) are oriented more toward the surface fleet.
|
 |
Squadrons, such
as Ghostriders in Naperville, are oriented toward naval aviation.
|
 |
Battalions, such
as Stockholm (Chicago), are oriented toward field operations and construction
battalions (i.e. SeaBees).
|
 |
Training Ships are specifically League Cadet units, often
associated with a Sea Cadet Unit, such as Butch O'Hare is associated with the
9-1-1 Division. |
