17-18 October 2008
| Life Lessons and Marching with Mac
"More stripes than a tiger" was what Aurora Division Sea
Cadets saw when they got the chance to spend a day with retired
Marine Corps Sgt. Major Mac Elvington, who graciously volunteered
his weekend to visit from Virginia and teach about marching, the
military and more than a little about life.
It started in the classroom with a get acquainted session and
the important lesson that wherever you go in life, your achievements
and mistakes follow. Mac counseled that drug use can muddy your
present and mess up your future, whether it be in the White House,
the military or your community.
Next we moved outside to learn close order drill (along with
cadets from the Cruiser Milwaukee Division) in a basic and
progressive way that the Sgt. Major has taught midshipmen, officer
candidates and raw enlisted recruits for decades. The weekend ended
with Mac passing some of the same lessons on to local and regional
USNSCC officers and instructors ... and that "life is all about who
you hang with" and putting your shipmates before yourself. We'll be
sure and thank our parents for providing our uniforms and sea cadet
adventures, another life lesson.
Thank you Sar-Major!

4 October 2008
| Aurora Division Drill at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in
Aurora The U.S. Naval Sea Cadets of the Aurora Division did
lots of outside activities to take advantage of the beautiful (but
chilly) weather.
The day started with our new senior enlisted person, CPO
Amanda Glass, setting the tone for the day beside our commanding
officer LTJG Catherine "Cat" Cabe, USNSCC. Next came a dress blues
inspection as we get ready to say goodbye to our summer whites and
get our blues in shape for fall and marching in the Veteran's Day
Parade in Downtown Aurora and perhaps a trip to the 8 Nov.
commissioning of the littoral combat ship USS FREEDOM LCS-1 on the
Milwaukee waterfront. We have to keep in shape too so Chief Glass
kept us on our toes, rolling on the ground, crab-walking and all-out
running with PT and fun games.
See you at our next drill weekend at Great Lakes Naval Base
where we'll meet and learn drill, history and naval customs from the
drill instructor infantry Marine who's trained Naval Academy and NROTC midshipmen, Marine enlisted and officer candidates, and
British Royal Marines (and royalty in the service). Expect a fun
time and lots to do and learn from Sgt. Major Mac Elvington, USMC
(retired) and father of three daughters. All questions accepted!
